WWDC is here, chat with us all day!

I’m sure all of you feel like this is Christmas morning…waiting for the parents to wake up and let us go ahead and open the presents, hmm? ;-) Join us for the fun!

First, here’s a quick round-up of what’s buzzing right now:

People have been re-tweeting on Twitter a so-called leaked photo from inside Moscone, showing the new iPhone to be called “iPhone HD” and that it would come in colors. This has been debunked because the exact picture of colored iPhones used in the “leaked picture” was already floating around the internet a couple of weeks ago.

Also, photos have been leaked of a “Magic Trackpad” or “Magic Slate” which seems to be a bluetooth trackpad designed in the style of the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard. This would bring touch capability to any compatible Mac (specifically, the Mac Pro, iMac, and Mac Mini). Whats more, some are even thinking that this is how touch will be handled for the rumored new iPhoneOS based AppleTV that might debut today.

We will be hanging out in our DeafMac.org chat room most of the day to discuss the keynote as it is being liveblogged, and the aftermath. For most of you, the chat will be accessible via the web at http://chat.deafmac.org. Unfortunately, this won’t work with Apple iDevices at the time. An alternative way to connect to the chat room is via IRC. Connection info follows:
IRC server: irc.deafgeeksirc.com
Non SSL Ports: 6667 & 8067
SSL Ports: 6697 & 8097
Channel: #deafmac

We recommend the following IRC clients:
Colloquy (Mac OS X client)
Colloquy Touch (iTunes App Store)

Last but not least of all – a quick tip when you get into the chat room – you might want to change your nick to something less generic. Just type /nick YOUR_NEW_NAME in the chat room, and you will stand out! See you there!

WWDC web feeds I know about, in no particular order:
MacRumors
Engadget
ArsTechnica
MacLife
The Apple Blog
Slashgear
C|Net
The Mac Observer
ModMyI
Macworld

Many of those liveblogs will also post to Twitter as well. There are some people who will tweet the event live too. If you have any other good liveblogs, please share. Some of those probably will crash since they are using the same CoverItLive service. That crashed last time too. :)

Does anyone know if FaceTime works with videophones?

#5 Plato :

We need to find out if FaceTime will work with our videophones as used by deaf people. If not, FCC needs to be aware that another videophone is incompatible with our videphones/

North Dakotan: FaceTime apparently is SIP compatible, which is what most modern videophones use today. Right now it’s only for iPhone 4 to iPhone 4. Apple says it is submitting the FaceTime to become an open standard today. We shall see what happens.

Plato: That’s not how it works. If Apple were marketing FaceTime as a VRS device, yes, it would have to be interoperable. Apple is not marketing FaceTime as a VRS device. The good thing is FaceTime is (hopefully) going to become an open standard.

The point is that too many of us deafies are TOO POOR to own iPhone 4′s which may NOT work with our existing videophones which may require major firmware upgrades to use the pending open standard FaceTime. We want this NOW, not wait a few years for slow approval jazz of a new open standard before our oldie videophones are upgraded for that.

poor? I ain’t poor and I do work full time and yes I am Deaf. $199 for 16gb or $299 for 32gb is reasonable price. They are in the ‘standard’ price range as other mobile phones.
I got to agree with what Genius is saying. Apple is not marketing iPhone FaceTime as a VRS device.

Plato: Just because some deaf people cannot afford the iPhone 4 is not a valid reason to complain that your existing videophone does not work with FaceTime. Your videophone worked just fine before Steve announced FaceTime, and will continue to work just as well now. (and I bet you that for every deaf person that is “too poor to own iPhone 4″ there are at least 100 hearing persons who are equally “too poor to own iPhone 4.”)

FaceTime is NOT for VRS. We hope it can be used with VRS (and as a result, will also be able to do point-to-point with our videophones.) The worst thing that can happen is that we have to use a 3rd party videophone application on the iPhone 4 (like P3, Z4, xmeeting, etc.) that enables VRS and point-to-point usage. We just have to wait until June 24th to see what FaceTime can actually do for us, and if there will be any other options as well.

In a nutshell, don’t worry about not being able to afford an iPhone 4, because those who can afford one, will either be able to call your videophone via FaceTime, or via a 3rd party application. You will be able to use your videophone just fine the entire time.
