Universal Access Feedback for Apple

Folks,

Let’s help each other out and send feedback to Apple to improve the Universal Access, specifically the Screen Flashes. You should submit feedback at the following link:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Attached is a screen shot of my feedback to Apple:

Feel free to use my feedback snippet or create your own.

The screen flash to visualize beeps was great in Tiger. Screen flashed for new incoming mails but it doesn’t with Leopard and Snow Leopard. I had to develop an AppleScript and set as a Mail rule to force a screen flash. I hope the Screen Flash functionality will be improved with more configurable options.

Configurable options would involve COLORIZED flashes as I would be able to assign particular colors for specific applications such as “Blue for Mail”, “Red for iChat”, “White for general beeps”, etc…

The more we send feedback to Apple, the chances they’ll hear us (no pun intended) and prioritize the Universal Access features in the upcoming builds.

I have a iMac question. What’s an easy way to mute your microphone w/o going through System Preferences? Your Convo interpreters have been asking me to do that. JM

I also would like them to look into creating something that are able to convert from voice to text in real time for videos or audio files. Something similar to Spinvox for voicemail or Dragon Naturally Speaking… I’m pretty sure it’s doable, it’s just matter of who will do it.

Jamie: Here’s what I did with my iChat, by going to Preferences, under “Audio/Video” — Microphone: select “Line In” instead of “Internal microphone”. Hope this helps.

Sent my feedback. I’m positive Apple is interested to know how many in the Deaf community (excluding free usage at state-run Deaf schools, GU, NCOD @ CSUN and NTID @ RIT) bought Apple products especially Macs. The more buys the more Apple takes note! Prioritize your spending (even if it mens less Deaf rallies such as Deaf cottage industries spawned by UFG, DBC, AFA) on the Deaf community and buy Apple products! Deaf numbers don’t lie. Period. DeafMac.org needs to certify and post nothing but hard numbers of Deaf owners of Apple products especially Macintoshes.

Hello!

Great site by the way! Slick layout! Actually, this is slight different topic (but same feedback). I just sent the feedback to apple iTunes regarding to add closed caption symbol and rating (if they want to). I created two mockup layouts to see what it looks like. If you know anyone that work inside apple, please show them those two links: http://www.twitpic.com/itpbb and http://www.twitpic.com/itobd

You’ll see closed caption and rating system in white symbol. Thanks!

I need your help about QuickTime Player. My MacBook is a brand new laptop — White MacBook 10X.6 while my PC laptop is 4.5 years old — Windows XP, SPS3. Yet Macbook cannot at all show a video of Aidan Mack’s film “I Sign and I Live” while my PC can show the film. Why?

Merci beaucoup.

Chad might I suggest that you and others also report the same thing using this link. https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn
This link is for reporting Bugs with Apple Products and or improvements.
Some of you will have to make a ADC membership account but it is free, My friend and myself has gotten great results from this.

I will be posting this at that link and the more that have the same problems or desires the quicker it will be looked at!

Cheers,
Grant

I input my feedback to Apple executive office – Apple headquarter. I don’t write feedback in English. I use ASL to call through video relay. Keep call every time. It will get Apple corporate an attention.

You can call Ruth at (408) 862-3314. (Apple CEO Steve Job’s executive office) Steve is open-ear to listen your feedback.

There’s a link about a presentation by an Apple representative at the TDI conference in DC last summer:
Apple’s Blind Spot
http://www.i711.com/my711.php?tab=2&article=301

I personally was there and could not believe my eyes. Apple sent someone to talk to us for 30 minutes about accessibility for blind people and yet could not answer any questions about our needs??

Also, there are issues with iTunes captioning.

There was a post on this site dated August 7, 2008 saying that there are 94 captioned movies on iTunes. Then post dated on March 31, 2009 said there were 122 captioned movies. Last month I personally (December 2009) saw only 180 captioned movies. Out of thousands of videos?? What’s up with that?

Not just that, only captioned movies can be found via Power Search – captioned TV shows cannot be searched! How are we supposed to find them? I would suggest that iTunes add the “CC” link on top navigation so it would go to a page with all captioned contents listed for each category (movies, shows, etc.)

Unless I missed other captioned media or features, please let me know.

Someone told me that Apple claimed all of their movies are captioned, all we need to do is to turn on by choosing Control > Audio & Subtitles > Show Closed Captions. I do see this in iTunes, but they are greyed out. They also said that I “might be confused” because only movies with “SCC” captions have the little CC icon in iTunes listing, and others have open captions or closed QTText captions, and these don’t get the CC icon. I have no idea what those abbreviations mean or whether they all work. I will inquiry at Apple further. Meanwhile, does anyone know about this feature and if it is true that all movies on iTunes are captioned?

@Jaime: Did Apple say anything significant during your phone call to them? What issues were discussed?

@Colin: I wonder the same thing about voice recognition. iPhone has an app from Nuance (there’s another post about it on this site), but not everyone owns iPhone, including myself (I use Blackberry). It would be nice to have that same thing for BB and for Mac OS X. By the way, Apple already included screen reader for blind users in Snow Leopard and yet hasn’t thought of installing a voice recognition for us? I know voice recognition is not great, but it is something they could start with and then eventually upgrade. It looks to me that Apple is too focused on accessibility issues for blind users, and that incident described above is one example.

I am going to write to Apple, too. However, I feel that the accessibility issues for deaf and hard of hearing users would finally get resolved by Apple if a group letter is sent to them with major issues finalized from a collective feedback within a group. It would look more organized and more powerful than feedback from individual users. What do you think?
