When I went to Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) to do a Mosdeux production, the first thing I noticed when driving through the campus gate was an Apple computer sitting in the security booth. It was a sight akin to witnessing a pig fly.
TSD is a Mac campus. Teachers, staff, faculty, administrators and students operate Mac computers. I suspect that an PC is probably used as a door stop in the superintendent’s office.
Apple did an article on TSD couple of years ago.
Do you know of any other deaf schools that exclusively use Macs?
Apple does the same with New York School for the Deaf!
Want to say thank you for share about Apple and Deaf School above…
I remember Oregon School for the Deaf got the first Apple Computer and recall it was Apple2E in 1982 to 1983. I image today that school end up having almost anywhere in this campus!
thanks

So does the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, too.
Yep, my kids go to TSD. Macs are everywhere. The high school students even have their own laptops on loan from TSD.
Apple computers are educational and I still don’t understand why other schools (deaf or hearing) uses PC mainly. :)
Yeah Western Pittsburgh School for the Deaf have full Mac, Mac server, MacBook and MacBook Pro.. I droooling and want work there.
I’m TSD alumni (78-92) and they always had Apple Macs since early 1980s and they were a huge deal for us. Am not surprised TSD remained Apple users for over 25 years.
Roger,
Applying for work in a Mac environment can be exciting. But, I think it would help your letter of interest if you get the school’s name right. It is Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf :)
Robert
To be fair and objective here I wonder how many TSD alumni who used Macs at TSD entirely from K to 12 got to buy Macs and work with employer-provided Macs? I’m really curious =) Please spare me excuses about cost and all that. I’m tired of Deaf excuses, Deafree and BS.
@Robert — I’m not TSD alumni however I want answer your question. I used Macs at several different public schools from K to 12 and even in college too. I bought Macs and even work with employer-provided Macs. FYI: I never actually buy a PC in my entire life. Mac does everything I need and am happy with Mac.
Hello, I graduated in FLORIDA SCHOOL FOR DEAF abbervation with FSD. There are Macbook and Mac computer in all board schools in FSDB. No one to use PC computer or PC laptop. They are acting like tradition with Apple product as more loyally. Who was recommended with Technical Department IN FSDB BY Bobby.C or someone.
The FSDB is more build dept and dorm and long of acres in the world than Any deaf schools can be beat FSDB? no problem, you can be come to there in FSD, you would see maybe you said WOW. NO QUESTION, HEHE
I interned at both Governor Baxter School for the Deaf in Maine and California School for the Deaf in Fremont – both use Macs almost exclusively.
Nice link! Thanks Chad.
Sorry if this is off the point from the deaf school topic. But there’s a place where I work for hearing schools. I work as system administrator for one of christian school. They have about 100 workstations which is mini mac (Intel based and mounted under the desks) using xp pro via bootcamp for active directory from win 2k8 server (Easier for me to manage from my office). The staffs use macbook pro and currently using os x 10.5+. They runs flawless!
I am student and also I live in ARLINGTON and I want to go TSD!But my mom is not allow me!But I am TEENAGER alreadyy!I am Hard-of-Hearing ‘Deaf’

That’s a great article by Apple! I know Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) has around twenty Macs, but with the superintendent’s love for Macs, that could grow?
