AT&T and Apple introduce new iPhone Text Accessibility for customers with disabilities.
SAN ANTONIO, April 29, 2008 — The iPhone is now even more accessible for Americans who are deaf or have a hearing or speech disability. Today, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced a new Text Accessibility Plan (TAP) for iPhone, designed to give iPhone customers with disabilities the choice of unlimited text messaging, Web browsing and easy access to e-mail for $40 a month.
“Our Text Accessibility Plan allows customers who are deaf or have hearing or speech disabilities to literally tap out their communications on the go,” said Carlton Hill, vice president of Product Management, Voice Products and Affiliate Marketing for AT&T’s wireless unit. “Now with TAP for iPhone, users can tap, drag, swoop, pinch and push the innovative Multi-Touch touch screen for a completely new world of functionality.”
This new plan is available to new and current iPhone users with qualifying disabilities through AT&T’s National Center for Customers with Disabilities (NCCD). To qualify for the iPhone TAP, customers must complete an application for eligibility. The form is available for download at http://www.wireless.att.com/about/disability-resources/text-accessibility-plan-for-iphone.jsp#tap.
During the iPhone activation process, customers sign up for a standard iPhone voice and data plan. After the iPhone is activated, customers can e-mail, fax or mail the eligibility form back to the NCCD to change their rate plan to the TAP for iPhone.
Current iPhone customers who qualify may also submit the NCCD application to request the TAP for iPhone. Customers can contact the AT&T NCCD with questions at 866-241-6568 for voice calls or 866-241-6567 for TTY calls.
AT&T offers TAP plans to qualifying customers for use with most handsets across AT&T’s portfolio. The NCCD also helps AT&T customers with disabilities with a variety of applications that aid in wireless communications. These include Mobile Magnifier, which enables individuals who have low vision or are blind to zoom in on the screen and Mobile Speak, which reads aloud menu options.

Pah!
Pah! Now, I’m definitely getting an iPhone (with 3G) this summer instead of Sprint (Samsung) Instinct.
Great!! Will do this once the upgraded iPhone OS comes out in June! Just disappointed that once again, we have to go see an audiologist or hearing specialist to prove our disability; there’s something paternalistic and demeaning in that.
The AT&T TAP includes voice call charges which can be of no help to us deaf iPhone users and should be DISABLED to prevent accidental charges as I had problems with this feature with another device before before my carrier was forced to disable a similar feature and refund all voice call charges caused by spam callers. As long as AT&T does not disable the voice call charge feature, no cigar, period!
Thank you AT&T. Thank you Apple!
About 5-6 weeks to go.
YAH!!!
I am going to buy iphone for myself in few days for sure! About time it actually happened!
Pah! I am looking forward to buying the next version (G3) of iPhone later this year. Cheers, Deaf Runner
Yes PAH!!!! I am waiting for 3G this summer then my Sidekick goes to grave forever….
Rubbish. Why must I go through the audiologist?? I haven’t seen my audiologist since high school over 30 years ago. Duh?
But but but I already spoiled with video mobile. when iphone will have a video mobile? I can not wait to get iphone with video phone in it. (restless)
Possible $199 for iPhone this year!
Best news I’ve ever seen in a long time. Seriously long time!
Yes, you-all are right! We must to have live video on iPhone to make Hands On VRS call because we are DEAF! Go Purple! If live video on iPhone then we will buy it for sure! Good bye to Blackberry and Sidekick!
Whoaaaa…. 6 weeks ago, I explained to NCCD. I am deaf with Rheumatiod Arth. I can’t use qwerty keyboard. Blackberry/sidekick/other smartphone with qwerty keyboard made me hurt my hand’s joints. Iphone is great for me to feel stress on my hand to soft touch screen on keyboard.
Hey Phil… not require to visit audiologist. Just see doctor to sign on paper then send back to NCCD. My wife has AT&T Tilt. She went to see family doctor. Just signed on paper then sent to NCCD.
Hey guys, don’t jump ship just yet… there’s a rumor going around that Apple might sell UNLOCKED iphones in their stores, meaning you get to choose your cell phone carrier but might have to pay extra for that option:
http://www.news.com/8301-13579_3-9931806-37.html
I bet TMobile is breaking in to get their share of the market in the USA like they already did in Europe in the past year.
$199 on iPhone is REFURBISHED.
It would be great idea to wait until 2nd-gen iPhone release with 3G to make worth for spend $40 a month instead on current iPhone with EDGE (2.5G). I’m hope for good app add-in such as dial-up modem, instant message and video mode.
And there isn’t any video conference, not possible unless there is video in front of iPhone to make comfortable and aware view. The hacker can but it’s annoying. It’s strong likely that camera will stick on back of iPhone.
I am here to dispute with Purple Gator. If iPhone has the push technology, I’ll agree with you! otherwise, i’ll stick to bb!
Woohoo! Thank you to AT&T

No it is NOT refurbished, that’s brand new iPhone for $199. We already know about refurbished for long long time!
We just switched over to the TAP plan which was simple and quick. I filled out the application and faxed it to my audiologist, then she faxed it to AT&T’s number listed on the application.
Took a couple days. Piece of cake.
check it out:

20 bucks for unlimited data plan!
Rene – sounds like a great deal, but also sounds like it’s a lot of work just to get half price on the data plan. I also think that if you go this route, you will be charged for text/SMS messages as compared to the TAP plan with unlimited texting.
IF the 3G iPhone is indeed subsidized, you will be looking at paying full price for the 3G iPhone just so that you can use the 20/mo plan. However, this is nice if you don’t want to be locked into a contract. :)
Hi, I am new here. I have a question. Would a new 3G iPhone be able to run on both Edge network and 3G network? I live in Maine, but the 3G network is unavailable, but a rumor was that AT&T expects to build the 3G network in Maine soon. When??? Do you know about between the 3G and Edge networks? TIA
Does anyone know if you get charged 40 c/min for listening to voice mail if you have the TAP plan?
They’re also supposed to be introducing an IM client, though I’m sure with the new downloadable software someone will have IM for us too.
Finally! I like unlimited TAP on iPhone. I can make many HOVRS calls through hovrsIM anywhere. I bet iPhone will have iChat available soon after WWDC 2008 is over. ;-D
I am planning to buy 3G iphone in Las Vegas on July 11th! I did talk with someone at AT&T about my current TAP on old (edge) iphone. Once you purchase 3G iphone, they will transfer my TAP o new iphone and I can do whatever I want with old iphone. Sell it, give it to a friend, wife, dog, whatever, but they will have to purchase contract with voice plan with AT&T by either walk into store or do from computer. I might sweeten the deal to sell iphone with Ojo video phone (once used) for more $$ :-)
Erik
Will the current TAP plan still be in effect for the new 3G iphone with its higher rates? I have been wondering about that.
The current TAP plan will remain the same for the new 3G iPhone. The normal (not iPhone) AT&T TAP plans only cost $30, so it looks like they built the extra cost into the iPhone plan from the start.
I still want to know if listening to visual voice mail uses minutes (on the TAP plan).
Sara
I received an email from NCCD, who administers the TAP program — here’s a response:
“Currently AT&T has not made any announcement regarding the inclusion of the iPhone 3G with the TAP plan. If the decision is made to include this device an official announcement will be made.”
I double check and called NCCD about the TAP plan for new iphone. They said that it is true and will honor it if you fill out the application form and have your doctor/audiologist sign it and mail/fax the form to them. So enough of all non-sense talking about TAP won’t work with new iphone, etc, etc. Yes it will be $40 monthly unlimited data plan only. All is confirmed as what we all want to know about so we all are good to go and buy new iphone with no problem!
14 hours to go!
AT&T? THIS YEARS (AND LAST) HAIRY BEAN BAG AWARD WINNER!!!!!!
I purchased my wife’s (very first) phone LAST CHRISTMAS upon being informed of the TAP plan by a well meaning sales person. Four months later, they’ve yet to connect (their own!) dots to make this a reality. Having been lied to, misled, misinformed, et al…
I would have cheerfully bought another iphone, but was told that t.a.p. was available for other specific devices. Which from I selected.
FOUR MONTHS LATER, still I wait…..
The latest is a “corrupt” pdf file that will not produce a legible form for the doctor to fill-out: ( for the THIRD TIME!! )
They’re real sticklers for cover sheets on TPS reports people.
To put it nicely.
for Tice,
I work for AT&T and had a customer with a similar issue… in the end, she came to my store, I had her interpreter sign the proof of disability form, I faxed it off and called the office to make sure they got the fax, customer service then backdated the TAP plan for her to give her credit back for all the months she had the un-needed voice plan. You just need to find the person on the inside that is willing to do the footwork for you ;-)
