Leopard: The Glass Dock

Leopard did a lot of UI (user interface) tweaking. They have completely redesigned the dock and the default look is the glass.

It is certainly a nice dock; however, it looks too busy for me. If you switch the dock from the bottom to the left or right side, you will notice that the dock changes from glass to a different style (I’m not sure what Apple has officially named this new “flat” version of the dock). I love that new flat look and I was able to replace it with my bottom-positioned glass dock.

If you’re interested in changing your dock, you may do so by opening Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and type in:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES

and then refresh the dock to apply the new change by typing in:

killall Dock

That’s it. If you want to change it back to the glass dock, repeat the above steps again and replace “YES” with “NO“.

Which do you prefer, the glass or flat dock?

I prefer the flat one. For some reason it seems to go smoother (magnification and bouncing) sounds like the glass is a CPU hog?

Oh I must thank you for this great tip. It brings out the items. It is easier on the eye. When I first noticed the glass dock, I thought it was busy like you said.

Awesome much better! I’m not highly on the glass dock. There’s other one I didn’t like: low opacity of File menu’s background because with low opacity background, it kinds of causing distract between the desktop wallpaper and it. Any tip to remove the opacity (set it at 100% or enable a solid bg)?

For those who like the glassy dock and wants to change it, here is a cool mod @ MacNN (see below). It worked great for me. Please read the instructions first before applying the mod.

By the way, there are many new tips for Leopard @ Mac OS X Hints.

Apple should make it a dock menu option, rather than having to do it by command line. :(

I don’t like flat and I don’t like default glass. There are over 35 customs docks to choose and there are a few indicators to choose. I did post earlier with a couple links but someone removed it. What’s up with that?
