Discussion: Why PCs are better than Macs?

PC vs Mac

Those who have been using Macs for a long time would always tell you this, “It’s much better than a PC.” While this is very true, I am going to open this post for discussion to allow loyal PC (Windows) users to tell us why it is better than a Mac (OS X) computer.

Let’s begin Round One now.

I have one simple request that we all engage in respectful and civil disucssions.

I use both a Mac and a PC at work. Side by side. The Mac is used for graphics work, and the PC for correspondence, database, research and most other work. There is no difference at all between the two, especially because at home I use my PC for everything, both graphics and correspondence and only wish that I had a second monitor to have the graphics and the correspondence side by side. (I get email telling me how to edit or change the graphics.)

Personally, I prefer the PC. The Mac can get tempramental, have software conflicts, and especially with fonts, gives me a headache at times. I constantly have to reboot it. The PC is easier to fix when it gets batty on me, and its softwares easier to work together. Also, the Macs are more expensive and yet don’t give me the extra service to be worth the expense.

My company is considering going all PC. If they do, I hope to have two PCs on my desk. Gets habit-forming to use two computers at the same time. (vbg)

Well, Microsoft has held a momopolistic control over software development, leaving far fewer applications for the Mac.

From a Deaf perspective, though, the advantage of the Mac is iChat thet makes multi-person video-chatting essentially FREE if you have a webcam and an AIM account.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat/

I know it kinda carves into the business of Hands On VRS, a MAJOR SPONSOR of this site, but the idea of Deaf people simply logging on to their computer and being able to chat via webcams FOR FREE (essentialy) it the wave of the FUTURE. And anyone who wants you to PAY THROUGH THE NOSE FOR THIS (or charge SSI) are going to die a very quick death.

Why PC is better than Mac? You find many pc software at many stores. Also you find pc computers at work. I work at a Federal government agency, i have never seen a MAC computer where i work.

I saw a new mac at a friend’s house in February. It is nice, but i don’t know if i want to buy another computer. Smile!

I’m a Mac user here..

I understand some of you prefer to use PC over Mac. If you want to know who had the orginal idea of desktop computer. I’d suggest you guys to rent a true story movie about how PC stole Mac’s ideas. It’s called Pirates of Silicon Valley

This movie will explain why lowly Microsoft Bill Gates drools over mac and stole most of idea from superior Steve Jobs.

Still today, I still find this extremely disgusted.

Enough said.

Yeah, the comments above are true… but for me, as an artist who use almost all Mac softwares for graphics and design stuff… I feel Mac has more leeway for me as an artist as opposed to PC’s.

PC’s are good for database. My job has PC’s and using Window Vista… it’s cool. If I had a choice, I would choose Mac over PC.

I like both PC and Mac. PC have tons of amazing functions for office applications includes database. Mac created GUI and physical design and it is the most widely most influence.

I hate Mac in a decade ago until Mac launched the major operating system in 2001, called OS X, run with UNIX (correct me if I’m wrong), I began fell in love with Mac.

Mac can do with web / graphic / movie designer, and PC can do with office business.

#3: Ha!

Anyway, I would say the main advantage that the PC has is that it’s cheaper. (I then ditch Microsoft Windows, and install Linux, thereby winning over BOTH PC and Mac users! Ha! Although admittedly my current plan is to get a Mac and dual boot with Linux.)

I’m a programmer/CS specialist and I can tell you that the operating systems (Mac OS 10.x versus Windows 2000/XP/Vista) leave the Mac as the clear winner. Windows is just a nightmare of jumbled code, barely patched stuff and so on. The essential problem is that Windows was originally written for the standalone PC — not for multiple users and NOT for internet connection. They’ve never properly rewritten the operating system (why should they? with their monopoly, people buy the system anyway) with those issues in mind and therefore that’s why Windows is so incredibly insecure.

There are loads of other technical issues, which I won’t go into detail here because frankly most people are interested in what is easily used, or what “makes sense” when they run programs and so on. (Which is perfectly reasonable.) But believe me, under the hood, the answer’s pretty clear: Mac wins.

And oh by the way, Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD, which is another desktop port of Unix (Linux is another better known port of Unix). So Unix wins after all! Heh.

Only thing I really like about the PC is their Microsoft Word program. I have used it as part of my work in the past and it works so much better than the Appleworks program for word processing and Excel.

I am a Mac graphic artist, and I have been using Macintosh since I attended NTID. I am very ignorant and know a little (really tiny) about PC. Years ago I considered getting a PC for myself because I saw PC everywhere. But fortunately Macintosh got better and became more recognized, thanks to Steve Jobs who returned and rushed to Apple’s rescue.

I’m going to break up my comments indvidiually so some of you can reply based on my comment number on my presented topics.

First of all, I would like to talk about pricing.

Few year ago, I would agree that the Mac computer is too pricey; however, if you paid attention carefully to its resale value, you do not lose a lot of money when you sell it. For example, I bought a $1,800 Mac Tower (G4) and used it for a bit over two years. I sold it off ebay for $1,200 which means I only lost $600.

With the $1,200 cash I had in hand, I bought another Mac computer for $1,400. I only paid $200 extra which made it CHEAPER than buying a new PC.

The point is, the resale value of your Mac is excellent unlike a PC where the resale value drops 95% as soon as it goes out of the reseller’s door.

Let’s talk about Macs today and where they stand on pricing.

Apple believes in selling the best of the best. If you were to compare the best MacBook vs a Dell laptop with similar specs, you will be amazied that the price is competivie and that Dell usually overprice their best laptops.

There is also a Mac Mini that starts at $599 (which you only have to hook up your existing monitor, keyboard and mouse to it). If this is not affordable, then I guess a worst of the worst computer will just do for $200.

To sum up, Apple is now in the market to compete against the current PC prices and with that said, the choice is yours; Mac or PC.

Let’s talk about what Macs are good for.

Most people think that Macs are only good for graphics. I would call it a popular myth today. I would like to bring back Tayler’s comment:

My first computer was a Mac but I was unhappy with the programming tools available on the Classic Mac OS, so I bought a Windows machine. As soon as Mac OS X 10.2, the first stable version, was released, I was back on the Mac just like that. I was already loyal to the Mac and was despondent that I had to use a Windows system to do what I needed to do.

So it was the improved availability of programming tools that switched me back to the Mac. I haven’t looked back since.

A lot of people still have the thinking that Macs are good for “graphics and film making”. That may have been true with the Classic Mac OS, however with OS X, the statement has been expanded to include almost all areas of computing.

Last but not the least, let’s talk about software and font support.

Microsoft does provide MS Office 2004 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage) for OS X. They are also releasing MS Office 2007 sometimes this year.

Dianrez (coment #1) said that there are font issues. Allow me to inform you and the rest of the PC folks that OS X is designed to read ANY PC fonts. Just save all PC fonts on a CD and transfer it to the OS X’s font folder (yes, just drag and drop the font files into the folder). There’s nothing more you need to do other than draging and dropping. You will have your PC fonts all ready to use when you run MS Word or Adobe Photoshop on your Mac. Yes, it is that simple.

There are a lot of PC softwares available. True. Let’s take a look at a calendar example. There are probably over 100 calendar softwares for a PC that you could dowload and use. Question, how many of those did you have to go through before finding the best?

OS X has iCal (calendar) and it is basically what we all need. Apple does extensive research and desgins the best and most demanding features (or you could say that Apple went through 100 different PC calendar applications and selected the best from each and grew ideas of their own as well) and resulted in the amazing iCal software. iCal also has got better for Leopard coming this fall.

As far as PC gaming are concerned, I will give that to you. A lot of gaming companies doesn’t support their software for Macs. That’s ok, I don’t intend to stay at my computer all day beacuse I would rather use Wii in my living room playing games for a change of scenry.

I don’t think one or the other is better. Each has it’s uses and the things it’s good at. It just happens that PCs have a much broader support base (applications, accessories, periferals) and are therefore more prolific.

MACs do well what they do well, and PCs do well in their relm.

It’s a matter of preference most times, not fact, which is better.

to Jessica,

You can use Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Macs and has been able to do that for a very long time. Appleworks are outdated by couple of years. I think you may have been thinking about a older Apple model but even back then, you could still purchase the Microsoft Office for Macs and install it to replace Appleworks.

For many years as a computing consultant, I always stressed on PC’s for business while Mac’s were for graphics. The story has changed after Steve Jobs returned to Apple. Now Mac’s are on par with PC’s pricewise when both have similar features side by side. Mac’s have better bundled software over PC’s. My last PC was destroyed by malware despite of firewalls, antivirus protection, etc a few years ago while my oldest active Mac is still going srong after changing from OS-9 to OS-X (10.1) with no operating system crash to date. I had have major crashes with Windows XP requiring me to re-install up to ten hours at a time. Yes, Windows XP works fine as long as it is not on the Internet.

Sorry, its a dumb topic. Which is better: Ford or Chevrolet? Honda or Toyota? Exxon or Shell? Vanilla or Chocolate? Sex with men or women?

Also, #3 is a great concept…

Hey…

I was going to write a comment. But, I don’t have to write because Chad has read my mind about the gaming issue. However, I hated to play game on the PC (my brother HP PC) because there was so many cheaters or modders that can beat online game easily. If I wanted to play fair game then I would go on my Mac because I noticed there are less cheaters or modders on the online game. Again, my iMac G5 last verison of iMac G5 did not do well on few games. I can’t wait to get the new macbook and see if there are any better performace with games.

I echo AIR’s comment (#19). Case in point: NTID’s Smart Classroom. I’m going to illustrate what happened in 2001.

Fact #1: The smart classroom had 30 PCs and 30 Macs.

Fact #2: There were five tech support staff hired to handle the smart classroom: four for PC and one for Mac.

Fact #3: An average of 55 hours were spent on each PC for maintenance and support while it was an average of 55 minutes for each Mac.

Fact #4: The Mac tech support staff had his leg up and resting on his desk and his chair bent backwards while reading the latest issue of Mac Addict while all four PC tech support staff were running the clock and overtime.

I have to give it to Microsoft because without them, a lot of people would be out a job. The government makes money when people are working so they know better to keep a PC to keep finances running and spending money in war.

No doubt about the resale value. I can’t argue with you, but still for me if I want to buy Mac, I have to dig deeper in my pocket to find some money. I can order a new pc just for $300 in a minute and upgrade it to the max.
Of course it is my goal to buy Mac.

#26 Andrew Markley :

I started computing in ’81 when I wrote a cash flow application for the IBM PC for a friend’s business. He didn’t have DOS on it yet, so we were working with the ROM-BASIC, written by Microsoft.

As a programmer, I appreciated the tricks of the trade with the Macintosh. Who knew they’d deal with the fragmented RAM allocation from the onset?!

It wasn’t long before I moved to Windows 3.1 and stayed until 98. One look at ME and 2000 convinced me Microsoft has lost its grounding with consumers. I moved to Linux cold-turkey in 1999 and in 2003, moved to the Mac OS X. I didn’t move because of Apple, I moved because it was a better version of Unix (FreeBSD) and more significantly polished that my family could use it without needing constant and daily tweaks.

To this day, I support 20-plus Macs of friends, family and colleagues. I couldn’t do that with Windows.

As for cost, the time wasted from wrestling with Windows, especially for small businesses, is very significant. My parents wouldn’t have dreamed of owning a business and keep the overhead low if it wasn’t for Macs.

Gaming is about the only thing that separates Windows from Mac OS X, that’s all. A friend was a Mac-hater, stuck on the fact that Macs were very expensive compared to PCs. He was also proud of his hand-built PC. He stopped being a Mac-hater the day I asked him how much he put into his baby.

Judging objects’ usefulness by their monetary face value is a fallacy almost every time. Would you pay $30 for a toilet that might break half the time or $90 for a toilet that just works? Or sneer and ridicule your friend for buying a Mercedes when he clearly could buy three or four Fords?

Far from being a fanboi of Apple, I subscribe to Consumer Reports, read reviews on about everything before I buy and exercise my consumer rights regularly. Skepticism is a very healthy virtue. Read, learn and question everything you’ve heard or read.

Cheers,
Andy

I couldn’t help but feel compelled to point out that the discussion topic is misleading. The PC acronym stands for personal computer, which is exactly what a Mac is by definition. We all have personal computers. We’re just running different operating systems on them.

I am a Mac user and I have yet to see a good point made by PC users. No one buys a computer for a single function-we want computers to do many different things for us. Gaming as the only thing that makes PC better than a Mac is certainly a poor reason for purchasing a PC.

Yes, but I will have to buy the Microsoft programs to put into my computer. Appleworks came with the older versions, you are right. Now there is Pages but I have to buy it and it translates Windows documents so much better than Appleworks but since it is a trial version, I cannot print or save or anything. They used to just include the word processing software with the bundle. Why don’t they do that now? Any suggestions or ideas, I am open. I use word processing and spreadsheets a lot.

I use 2 PC at work, 2 PC at home and 1 powerbook that I considered as my “toy”.
The biggest advantage of PC is that there are plenty of cheap PC parts that you can put together. The x86 architecture has been around for a long time and there are thousands of not hundreds of vendors supporting parts for this system. No matter how good Apple gets, they cannot complete with PC in this area. Therefore, Mac will always be more expensive than PC.
From an operation system prespective, OSX is much more user friendly as compared to Windows. But I often find that I can get work done must faster and easier on Windows than OSX.
Windows international language support also appears to be superior than OSX.
Finally, gaming support for Mac is lacking, this can be a big factor for many gamers who only have the money to buy one computer.

Well, here we go again… The same old story and I mean really, really old!! So old that it is becoming a thing for grumpy old men.

Since PC is not the appropriate word to use – I will say non-Mac systems will always rule because it is a dead weight like oil. Why are we still using oil that pollutes our air and takes our money. Because it is there and everyone uses it and don’t know or don’t care to change. Think about it – you walk into a store any tech store and what do you see – a million non-Macs and if you are lucky – a tiny little corner for Macs. Now where are the people going to go?? Unless you give the first timers a Mac they will not catch on – it is a fact of life!

Non-Macs will always appeal to me cuz they are so interchangeable! I can take a old PC and use the parts from it into the new system and vise-versa… I have 4 non-Macs at my home and if something goes wrong – I can swap parts. Macs, before using Intel processors couldn’t – I know I tried.

But, hey, who am I to talk, huh?? Cuz you all will bash me. So, I say like the other person said – it is a personal preferences. You give me a Mac and I will thank you and use the hell out of it. But me go out and buy one. No thanks, I’ll just continue to buy parts and you can’t tell me that it is more expensive. Dare you to try! Any takers?

As a programmer and PC repair person, I don’t give a damn what the machine is – if it needs fixin’ then give it to me and I’ll fix it! Mac or non-Mac. The pay is the same – free! All you have to do is give me the software or hardware if needed.

Wanna talk about longevity?? No problem, my wife has a Dell laptop that is 9 years old and everything is original! Swear to God! I have not seen any one machine last that long and I’m talking about any machine – even cars. The secret?? Leave the damn machine alone!!

Virus problems? Read a book! Never got hacked once after I put in the virus protection tools and read how to use them. The secret is to not publish your IP address! That is all – if the hackers can’t see your IP they can’t see you, right?? Pretty simple stuff and every one person that I have cleaned up or fixed a computer has never gotten attacked again.

OS?? They all suck!! And Linux is king cuz it is free! You can’t argue with that, sorry… But it is still not the best – you still have to fight it just like all the other OS and that includes OS-X, sorry.

I love programming and my programs are the best!! Why?? Cuz I make them do what I want them to do! Not because I’m the best programmer, no sir, but because they work the way I want them to and they all work great!

So, how is that for a non-Mac fan?? We are out here and just have too much good news that it takes time to type it all out – so in saying that I bid all good night and happy computing! Just be proud that you have one cuz you are one out of 700 million people – what about the other 5 billion?? So, if you have a Mac or not find a soul and give it to them. I know I do and still end up with more computers!!

I love MAC since 1985. My dream to have 100% Mac at my company that run http://www.deafpagers.com and http://www.deafbuy.com. in first year, we installed Mac ibook there. our employee don’t know how to use Mac. Gallaudet trained students to use PC, not Mac, Another reason, cost of Mac so expensive, 1 Mac vs 3 PCs. So forced me to purchase cheaper computers, over 10 of PCs (almost all are Dell) and installed in our company also installed one iMac for graphic and web development… Leave over 10 PCs for office operations, not need to train employee to use. My company is five year old now and there are 12 PCs, Window based server, and 2 Macs, Only one PC is retired and all of other PC still in operation. Now I am calling for service to clean up all PCs. My Mac DUAL G4 dated 2002, still run on OS 10.4 at home. Clear that Bill Gates won the battle due to cost of hardware. Even I spent outside technician is around 1,500 during five years.

Brian Mayes (#33), well presented! This is the type of case that I love to hear, especially when somebody have already experienced all types using Windows and OS X (and Linux). Your reasons for preferring a non-Mac machine is well-respected and understandable. I won’t bash you for that, smile.

I, too, am a programmer and I still use Windows (which I will call XPuke) for my programming needs since my preferred language is .NET’s C# using MS SQL Server 2005. I run XPuke alongside OS X using Parallels.

I just happen to be a simple guy who just wants everything to just work without having to read anything, taking extra measures to protect my computer. I just want to use my computer that provides me with great productivity tools built into the OS X core. In fact, I do hope that I remain to be one of the few people using Macs because I worry that the bigger customer base Macs has, the more likely it’ll have some viruses introudced. *knocks on wood*

Brian Mayes, thank you for your well presented case and I hope to see more of that.

“…my wife has a Dell laptop that is 9 years old…The secret?? Leave the damn machine alone!!”

“Virus problems? Read a book!”

“The secret is to not publish your IP address!”

I rest my case – you’re better off with a Mac – a simple loving machine that will just work. :)

JAC #28 found something that Windows (Not PC, paying attention csano? :-)) does better than Macs… gaming! Come on, Chad W Taylor and explain that one away! I’d love to see you do that :)

Jackie #24, I was not the one who said “without Microsoft = no job”! Not sure who said that, but Microsoft sure gave csano a job!

My answer to gaming? I don’t game! For the rest of you, Watch out, there’s rumors Apple is getting into the game. The game isn’t over until Apple takes their bite. Game time.

#38 Tayler :

Wayne, I’ve got some quips for “Brian Mayes” too (isn’t that eerily similar to my name?). Let’s find out if he’s still reading.

9 years ago, Dell were well-built. In fact, they were reputed for their quality. Not so much anymore. My wife’s Dell (she had to get one for school–a unfortunate requirement) lasted 3 months. Got a new logic board. Three months later, the screen goes dark. Three months later, the keyboard is completely replaced. In 9 months’ time, 90% of the laptop is replaced.

Now, Brian Mayes, can you honestly tell me you want to drive a Ford Taurus because the car parts are so interchangeable with its cousin, the Mercury Sable? Or do you want to drive a BMW, whose parts are un-interchangeable with anything else? Sure, the BMW requires premium gasoline, insurance is probably higher, maintenance is higher, but if you could dish out the moola, a double take is something a honest man wouldn’t do. :)

With the migration to Intel chips, more of Apple’s parts are interchangeable than ever. But that’s only because Apple wanted to give you the best equipment. They have to care because you care. Non-Mac manufacturers just stash parts that cost the least and hope it holds or that you won’t notice. My wife, with a 90% new laptop, sure noticed.

May 4, 2007
2:31 am

AMEN, Tayler!

I used to own a Alienware laptop (remember?). After only a year, it literally fell apart: screws disappearing, fans not functioning which overheated the CPU, the graphics card screwing up… there is just too many maladies I have had with it!

Finally, I was so fed up and sold it to purchase a PowerBook 17″ — the BEST move I’ve ever done.

May 4, 2007
7:28 am

Hi, I’m baaaack!! Heh heh!! ;-)

Yea. Been there, done that. I know about things not working right at times. I know a friend who bought a BMW with 50% of the parts replaced too. It happens and they are called lemons! It is just things that happens. We live with it, but we can’t blame anyone, but ourselves for buying it.

If I had 35K to 125K for a car (and forget the 35K BMW – why do I want a cheap BMW??) which I would rather pay on a house, I would buy the BMW, no question there. I’m a sucker for quality, but you have to understand that only what 10% of the people have that luxury. It is sad, but true. So what are people going to do because they really want a computer, they will buy the cheapest, most affordable computer. And MACs are not down there in prices – I’m sorry. If I wanted a Mac, I want a nice one – not the mini-Mac! I want the G5 – I want something that I can put my hands in and expand! Where does that start – around 2K to 3K, oops – there is the turn-off. Sorry, but it is the sad fact.

Like I said before, give me a Mac and I will use the hell out of it and love it!! I promise! But I can’t so I will love the non-Mac… As will 95% of the other people who have one.

My dream?? That Apple, Micro$oft and all other computer manufacturors, just stop being greeding and get together and make the ultimate machine and OS!! We all know that when worlds collide that things come out better. But that is just a dream, right? Or can we make the dream happen?

But hey, I’m happy and you are happy, so group hug and lets put on the gloves and go to round two!! Heh heh! ;-)

8:24 am

yea, gaming is the hot ticket right now. But you know something, my first game to ever play on a computer was (I think) Lode Runner on a Apple IIe!! No joke! I loved it and found ways to hack and make copies of the games! It was my love – was 18 and sent off to college all alone… Boo hoo hoo, but the Apple saved my life cuz she loved me and let me play with her! So, I learned all the hacking tricks and computer building from that Aplle in school. And I wanted one! No kidding, I wanted that baby! So, I worked all summer remodelling homes – working 14 to 16 hours days to scrap up 2,000 bucks to buy an Apple. Finished my job, went to the store to get one and found out I didn’t have enough to buy one! I was totally crushed! I lost my girlfriend!! The gal (new girlfriend?) at the store suggested that I try for the IBM machine… IBM??!! The UNIVAC!! No way!! But then I saw that they had indeed come a long way. AND! The sad part, I could afford it! I was so happy! I got it, took that heavy babe with me to college and opened her up and just fell in love! And we got married!

Happy story?? True story. Thought I share it cuz I know you all love a love story. Or am I a certified nut?

Moral of the story?? Games attrach people and the games are on non-Macs. So, Apple better get hustling!! But why do they need that?? They have the iPod and they are taking over the world!

The other moral of the story?? First impressions wins the day. Once you get people hooked onto something, it is hard to change them. That is why M$ will never win in the Zuna vs. iPod race… They might as well forget it! Same with Apple, forget the games and save their money for R&D and just keep being creative and make new toys!

Question for Brian Mayes (yes, Tayler, I was wondering if this was a double stunt here, smile) – Would you rather buy the best of the best G5 for $2K or buy a $1K Non-Mac and buy another $1K worth of upgrades to par in with the G5?

Gaming – I don’t play games, either. However, if I do play games, I don’t want to be back on my computer (I’m already on my computer all day) as I would much rather play Nintendo’s Wii in the living room. For those who are saying gaming is the ONLY reason the Non-Mac is won by them, then I would suggest a Mac and buy Parallels (that allows you to run XPuke alongside OS X) or use Apple’s Boot Camp that allows you to physically boot either XPuke or OS X. There, you’ll have the best of both worlds, a Non-Mac OS and Mac OS on one physical Mac computer — in other words, two for the price of one!

To the Twin Taylors -

You both have a good point. Buy a 1K system and get 1K of parts to match the G5? Absolutely!! Why? Cuz I like to tweak and make things better and as long as I’m able I will continue to do so. But hey, that is me – the nutso! ;-) But the nicest thing about this methology is that you can buy 1K system now and then save up some money for a month or 2 and get some nice parts and so on and so forth until you have the ultimate machine – only to the owner of the system. Not have to shell out everything for one system.

But, the cruz of it is – most people won’t, but most people don’t know that and that is the sad part. People who sell the systems don’t either – that is why a lot of the times people beg me to tag along with them to buy a system. And believe me, I’m not bias! I show them both systems and they make the final decision. People still go for the non-Macs. They are just cheaper for the bang. And then there are some who really have the big bucks, but their mind is on gaming and what can I say??

I have experimented with Boot Camp and you have to be honest here guys – you need a powerful system to make it worth its salt. It takes a lot of CPU and RAM to run both OS. But I agree with you about XPuke! It is not a good OS that is why I call it Xtra Problems and I tell everyone about it. Vista is only a little better and I try to get them to use Linux, but they are terrified! M$ did a wonderful job, huh?? Money talks and crap walks. I hate every bit of it, but I have to live with it.

I know in the past, the Mac hardwares were expensive. But, I want to emphasize this that Mac hardware has been reduced to reasonable price with the quality softwares and services. Here’s an example that I found ConsumerReport.org on internet and please read what they have to say about Mac. Also, we are the most least hardware repaired requested by customers.

May 4, 2007
11:17 am

I hear you, but if you look at the list of parts that Apple shows on there G5 – you will see the same parts are available for the non-Macs too… Only because Apple quit the IBM RISC chip (Stupid IBM for screwing up the sales market!) and started using Intel. Well, when that happened they had to use non-Mac components to build their G5. So, we really can’t focus on hardware anymore – the whole battle now is the OS and Apple wins hands down. So, that means that the non-Macs machine were always good – it was always the OS.

But I have a question for you all. If Apple PC were as popular as non-Apple PC – would they still be as vunerable to virus and other attacks?? The way I see it is that people just hate M$ so they put all their energy into busting M$ OS.

But youa re right that Apple’s service has always been the best. They care about their customers. No questions about that and I totally respect them for that cuz customers are always #1!

Brian L Mayes, I think you’re a in-closet Mac lover! If money was no issue, you’d own a Mac.

We can get him a Mac Mini for $600, but he wants expandability. And the lowest priced Macbook starts at $1,099. Apple has made strides in this department, but they can’t go any lower without sacrificing quality. We don’t want them doing that, right? Alternatively, on the higher end, MacBook Pros and Mac Pros ARE price competitive, if not better.

Who wants a G5?! Gee, Gents! What’s the matter with you! Give this Brian L Mayes dude a MAC PRO! 5 Million possible configurations! He’d never sleep.

Chad and I aren’t twins. Tayler is my middle name. Taylor is his last name. He’s Canadian. I’m American. He’s tall. I’m average. He has a head full of hair. I’m bald. He’s a .NET programmer. I’m a PHP programmer. We may be brothers, but twins, we aint. :)

Jackie #49 I’m not quite following your comment. The iMac comes built-in with a monitor and starts at a low $999. The other computers (Mac Mini and Mac Pro) aren’t packaged with monitors because you can easily add an Apple Cinema Display to your purchase. The Cinema Displays are high-end (more than what most people need) so they encourage BYOM. Bring Your Own Monitor. My monitor is a Benq 19″ Widescreen LCD at $200.

The bottom line is that people with PC have nothing better to do. MAC people know what they are doing.

All PC people want to stick with PC and keep them occupied and pull their hairs when the problems arise.

All MAC people just enjoy the quality time and do a few things on MAC and move on life.

Hi,
I first got Lisa from Steve Woz. He live cross mountain away. He alway invited us to his party and met me and gave me free LISA in 1983. Next year and got free Mac in 1984. My father and Woz was friend. Chad Taylor saw steve woz’s home. Remeber this. Wink! I love apple is full of surpised and very ethics about apple buisness. If you read history about Apple. Its so awesome!! Better than any computer business. Apple have so many history going on there!!

Simple answer..

Apple is father of PC!

Apple build a CRAY
Apple Build a M$hit.
Apple Build a NeXT
Apple Build a iPOD
Apple Build a iPHONE

What else? tooo many.. Anyway,

Mac is like Porsche
PC is like a VW

Mac is like ASL
PC is like a SEE

Mac is friendly
PC is snob

Mac is full of ideas
PC is a CopyCat

Mac is art
PC is PC

Mac is only one busiess in world such as only Apple Tree..
PC have hundreds business such as dell, ibm, hp, emachine, compaq, and moreee…

Mac can run PC
PC cant run Mac

Mac = Install and Play
PC = Install and Pray

I m thinking, therefore Mac

#56 Tayler :

Hey Roger!

“Apple build a CRAY
Apple Build a M$hit.
Apple Build a NeXT”

Apple built Cray? I think Cray is a supercomputer company that never had anything to do with Apple?

Apple built M$hit? Surely you don’t mean Microsoft? What do you mean by Apple built M$hit? If you’re implying M$hit’s tendency to copy Apple, remember Apple “copied” Xerox’s first use of the mouse or was it the window? Whatever it was, Apple owes some of its success to Xerox.

Apple did NOT build NeXT. Steve Jobs did. Apple bought NeXT.

May 6, 2007
4:20 pm

Tayler, Apple did “copy” Xerox PARC’s Mouse/GUI implementation.

Microsoft, THEN, copied from Apple.

Not sure about the Cray company, though. :P

#58 Roger Vass :

CRAY:

“He is the Thomas Edison of the supercomputing industry,” –Larry L. Smarr
When told that Steve Jobs bought a CRAY to help design the next Apple, Seymour Cray said, “Funny, I am using an Apple to simulate the CRAY-3.” LOL… Its true!!!

M$hit

Bill Gates did borrow Mac to their office. The engineers and programming ran many test on apple’s hardware before it released to use in IBM PC. Bill Gates saved Apple from business crash. He invested $400 millions to Apple. He said that we use Apple to build Window 1.0. I saw him on Video at MacWorld Expo. Everyone was shocked about this. He admitted!

NeXT:

Steven stole all engineers from Apple and build new NeXT to run new OS of Unix based. They did testing on Apple hardwares before released to new hardwares. Because the hardwares was in beta stage. Which mean not ready to use their hardwares. They have to use apple’s hardwares. In the past that Steven Jobs want Mac OS change system to use thier UNIX based. But the board members said No. Thats how he got furious with boards and got fired from Apple.

Yes, Apple stole the GUI idea from Xerox. But Apple never had chance to take hardwares to Apple. Xerox is idiot. “The Xerox case was dismissed because the three year statute of limitations had passed (i.e. Xerox waited too long to file suit.)” Their loss and our gain!

Per Judge’s request to stick to the subject: I found another reason why Macs are better than Window machines. On my laptop, putting it in sleep mode is as simple as closing it. The same is true for waking it up, just open it up and it’s ready to play (or work).

My wife, if you remember her 90% replaced laptop, doesn’t like putting it to sleep/hibernation because it takes too long to wake up. The result? She leaves it running all day and night. Can’t be good for the environment and hardware.

Hiya all!! I’m baaaaaaaaaaaack!

LOL You all are funny!! One question: Are you all Mac lovers or Mac fanatics?? ;-) Sorry, my bad!!

Business is business and everyone steals from somebody else. If not, the world would be boring and dull, right?? It is called healthy competition and it is here to stay!

I’m glad Bill Gates “stole” or is not more like “copy” the Apple GUI and ran with it cuz if not, Mac will still be using the old GUI! So, they are both fighting for the best OS and then Linux is merging and then we all crash and make only one OS for everyone! Do I hear a YEA??

I don’t know about all those poetic comments, but they are funny, none-the-less! And it gets my curousy up to do some research. Cray is THE supercompter! And it uses or did use RISC chips – the same as Apple. But Cray is not Apple and Apple is not Cray. Or do you want to label the most powerful supercomputer from the DOT (Dept of Transportation) as a non-Mac cuz it uses a thousand Intel chips?? Ummm… Non-Mac rocks! Just ruffling the feathers.

Am I alone here?? Help!! I’m in a room of Macies and need an outlet. Nay, keep at it guys, I can handle it… I think.

The Joy of Tech does a great comic about the things we “hate” about Apple. Remember, it’s healthy to laugh at ourselves.

Brian L Mayes, I do not want one OS. Not having competition is bad for innovation. I just want an OS that keeps with the standard expectation of an OS. It’s just a bonus/perk that Tiger is already on or above par with Vista which was recently released, and Leopard is just going to send the OS expectation soaring. Or is that roaring?

Good point there – in both cases!!

Oh man!! I wish I can get my hands on the latest Mac OS!! I was not all that impressed with the Vista release. I mean, it had cool stuff and all that, but it was nothing new – I could dupe everything from the Vista on the XP by downloading free sniplets of code.

it’s always been clear to me that macs are better than pc’s, and the reasons just keep getting clearer with each new product release that apple makes.

it used to be that the macs were better for what i needed, and that was good enough for me. never mind the gaming and the programming issues on the mac. i didn’t need them. the mac (especially since osx) is simply a beautiful operating system, and that in itself was good enough for me, since i didn’t care much for anything else.

however, as i got into other areas of computing (web design, graphics, programming, etc.), i have had to look at what really was the best machine for the job. there were times when i wondered whether i should buy a pc for the jobs i needed.

that all changed when apple released boot camp (and when parallels desktop was released). i then lost all my reasons for even needing a pc at all. i just simply didn’t need a pc to do anything i wanted. there might be a few minor issues with using boot camp or parallels (none of which i’m immediately aware of at the moment), but with each software update that they provide, the reasons for needing a pc are becoming non-existent.

buying a pc, on the other hand, would have hindered me from experiencing all the excitement from simply being a part of the mac world – not something i’m willing to sacrifice after everything i’ve experienced!

That’s interesting articles what you guys wrote about PC and MAC. I loved my MAC computers since 1997. I bought my first Macintosh computer and also, bought a second PC Gateway. I noticed that PC setup, add/remove programs and other programs always cause many problems after viruses affected it. That was really wasting my time to fix over my old PC and running over anti virus programs, there was nothing to resolved it and forced me to format all system and restore it. I stopped to buy any PC computers since 2000. I knew it that PC is really many problems and I don’t want to use them anymore. I loved OS X system since to now and there is really wonderful system, less headaches, rarely and maybe zero viruses since I used it so far. OS X is really solid operating system over since old Classic OS 9. Mac OS X arrived since last 2000. There had 4 different versions, 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4. I am using OS X 10.4 Tiger. Tiger is really excellent version. I heard about Leopard OS X 10.5 will released this fall. I will buy new one after they release it. I will still buy new tower or laptop with INTEL processor next year. Did you know that Intel Mac computer can run Vista and MAC OS X (10.4 or better)?? Come on, PC users, you can use MAC computer and using Vista and MAC OS X switchers. You will learn some new about MAC OS X. I did affected to my some friends and they already switched to MAC then one year later, they said, its worth and less stresses.

About PC and MAC Operating system’s versions

I don’t believe that there is not understandable version for Windows series. I looked at Windows version history. Look at below for example:

Windows (DOS)
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows 2000
Windows XP (what a heck?)
Windows Vista (what a heck?)

Strange?? They aren’t sort right way.

Look at Apple Macintosh versions, below:

Mac OS 1.0

To

Mac OS 10. (Wow, that’s simply answer!)

They have simply good orders. They updated the versions with 10.4.1, then 10.4.9 for final current version. There is really similar with other companies like Sidekick versions and other programs like AIM, Yahoo, and etc. I don’t understand what is going on with Micro$oft Windows world. People keep saying, “What is XP or Vista standing for??” What an idiot! Bill Gates have no common senses! Interesting!!

Hope you can help me answer the questions:

1) A friend told me that Apple will discontinue making notebook and desktop since they have Intel processor and will shift to selling the operating system due to competitvely and will focus on iTunes and other products where they make a large profit. I search for the reference on this and didn’t find any and can you back up if this is true?

2) Is it all about the operating system or is it also about the hardware? You can build a PC and make it powerful by buying the parts and assemble it together.

3)If Mac is superior for graphic designer and some applications. Then why is Mac not good for gaming when gaming required good quality video card and memory and the debate pointed that PC is not suit for graphic designing but good in gaming?

All those years that I have been Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers (MCSEs). I worked for a large company during 1992 – 1996. We have five NeXT computers in our office at that time. I fell in love with it with their graphic user friendly. I knew once I learn that Apple bought NeXT last December, 1996. Steve Job brought with him most of the NeXT executives to replace their Apple counterparts. My eye locked on Apple and waited for OS X 10.2

I decided to pursuit advance my skills on MS Network System and same time keeping eye on Apple. Then one day, I decided to go back to Graduate School to pursuit my education.

I have been sticking with Toshiba laptop since 1989 until December 2002. I been waiting for the right time to buy my first PowerBook 15″ G4 1GHz (1GB Mem.) with World first SuperDrive last December 2002 (reminded me when Apple bought NeXT last December 1996) I knew that it is right time for me to buy it. Ever since, I never had any problem with my Mac PowerBook and software OS X 10.2 to 10.4.9 present.

Let me tell you an interesting story… 25 of us went to China for Deaf Education for a month (June 2004). I’m the only one bring with my Mac PowerBook. Guess what? Most of them bring their own laptops (Gateway, Dell, HP, Toshiba -my favorite). It amazed me that none of their laptops able to connect wired or wireless on internet in all 5 star hotels. However, I did tried get their laptop connect with internet but still couldn’t get connect correct. It baffel me ever since. But, at the same time, my Mac PowerBook can simply connect either wired and wireless easily. They all end up using my Mac PowerBook to check their emails, IMs, and also downloading all of their digital pictures from their digital cameras (one month worth) in my Mac PowerBook.

As soon as we depart Hong Kong, I made a copy and return their photos on DVD. They were even impressed with Mac. Interesting to learn that 12 out of 25 already decided to buy Mac PowerBook within six months from our trip to China.

That is why I fell in love with Mac because of their elegant simplicity and mostly common sense! while MS Window get lost in maze. (lot of steps..click, click, click… you know what I mean by this~)

Perfect analogy for me to see and from my experience as well:

Mac – Solid, smooth, steel ball
PC – Full of holes in Swiss cheese ball ( with alot of band-aid cover..eheh )

Mac is still getting better each day!;)

PS: I’m still using my PowerBook with iSight for my VideoPhone (VP) and also did installed new upgrade hard drive 100 Gb 7200 rpm last fall. It run just like a brand new PowerBook…

Again, it is right time for me this week to order new MacBook Pro 15″ 2.4 GHz with upgrade 4 GB memory and 160 GB 7200 rpm.

* Gaming is non-issue for me since I prefer to play “physical” sports rather than sitting down with getting all weight gaining.

#81 It is interesting to hear this as far as I know Apple will continue with MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacPro, iMac and Mac Mini. Maybe your friend is just simply jealous.

My favorite motto: Think different!

JB
