Discussion: What widgets do you use?

If I were given a challenge to determine your personality type from just looking at your OS X setup, the first thing I would go to is your Dashboard and see what widgets you have on the screen. Are they cluttered? Organized? What widgets do you use? Stock? Weather? Calendar countdown? Believe me, they tell us who you are.

Here’s a screenshot of my Dashboard.

Chad’s Dashboard

- iStats Pro
- Package Tracker
- hovrsWidget
- CharacterPal

So, what’s my personality type, anybody? :-)

How bad of Chad and me! Looks like that Chad is my grandson in taste. We both have all the same widgets, oh well! Do not tell everyone about this fact(?)!

There are three widgets but I don’t use widgets in general. They are iStat Pro, Weather, and hovrsWidget. It fits my personality: minimalist.

Your personality is overachiever. :) A clock for Cupertino? Cute. Two calendars and two weather panels…

I’d be curious what percentage of Mac owners use widgets.

I use two weather widgets – one for Roseville and one for my parent’s location. I miss how diverse the weather is back in the east coast.

As for four clocks, I need it because I’m always traveling. As for using two calendars, I like to use one for the current month, and the other calendar for different months so I can compare against them two to count weeks, days or whatever.

Ahh, good idea. I was wondering why you had two calendars. Well, I use CNN news widget, weather, Address Book Search, Yellow Pages, White Pages, HOVRS widget, Post Its, dictionary/thesaurus.

Oh, yeah, I forgot DeafRead has a widget. It’s not much to look at, but works. I used a template to put it together in 2 minutes.

Wow…I rarely used widgets. It’s time to revisit if they are worth it or not.

Jessica, your wish has been granted. The blog title now shows up before the post title. There is no need to re-download the widget.

Back to my love: Macs!

I do use widgets

Calculator
ESPN hockey news
5 Flyers jersey dates
clock for london
2 weathers- one for home one for work
Hurricane Tracker
Samegame
K-notes for my notes. I like this one because you can add new notes by clicking on “+” on the note itself not having to open the widget bar on the bottom of the screen
dictionary

Thanks, Tayler! Some ideas I got from you all on what good widgets there are. I like K-notes, that sounds good. I just downloaded a new one last night, Starry Night Widget. Shows what stars and planets are out in the sky. I keep seeing this little shiny thing next to the moon last night and was wondering what that was, a star or planet? So I downloaded it and ahh, now I see. It is nice for those who like stargazing. You can type in your zip code and what direction you usually face (for me, it is to the west).

With a Dashboard like this, you must be using 200% of your physical RAM just with widgets. :\

Check out memory usage in Activity Monitor

#24 Trudy (a transplanted MN overachiever) :

Today I saw a postcard at the store that said for Minnesotans, 80% of our conversations are about weather.

That must be why I have so many weather widgets on mine. That, or I’m an old fuddy duddy now. Tayler, given that you’re in California, you prolly don’t need a weather widget anymore???? Chad, hush about the ice fishing; you’re scaring me already with all these widgets on your Mac… :-O

- calendar

- NY clock
- California clock

#26 J :

4 clocks! Nice! I used to use widgets:

-dictionary
-weather
-currency converter (b/c I was living in a foreign country at the time)
-unit converter (ditto)
-istat pro
-horoscope
-comic strip
-sudoku!

you could definitely tell from the last 3 that my personality is TIME WASTER, haha.

but then I decided to disable my dashboard completely, after learning that widgets completely eat up your RAM. my computer is soooo much faster now that I dont have a dashboard. And I dont really miss the widgets, after all.

Sorry, comments are closed.
