A message from Barry Solomon

Hey all! Been using my iPhone for two weeks now. Love it. Still quite a few things to fix on it before it becomes 100% of what I want it to be.

I am going to be at a meeting between Apple and AT&T and TDI next week, to discuss the accessibiltiy issues with the iPhone.

I’d love for all of you who have an iPhone to send me comments, ideas, or point out shortcomings with the iPhone. With one limitation – it needs to be ACCESS-RELATED, not a wishlist of features on it for the general public.

Some examples that I’ve got from friends (thanks tim) was for them to add an option to forward all phone calls to voice mail automatically, and to make voice mail “forwardable” via e-mail.

Enable TAP plan. More vibration options, etc.

If you all could post on here I can make a long list of access related issues and present to Apple / AT&T.

Thanks!
Barry

In addition to what you mentioned for accessibility issues especially more vibration options. Wonder if possible for new email message(s), it wakes up from sleep (like it does for new incoming SMS/text which I really like!). This would be handy for when I’m leaving it on table, et al. And possibly of adding CC option to Quicktime. (pretty much like the CC option on actual Quicktime on Mac). Also if beeping error or system sound, have option to make it “flash” on screen like it does on Mac.
Love my iPhone, too! Took me few days to get used to keyboard, thou.

P.S. Forgot to mention this.. while this is mostly a wishlist feature which it being iChat, however we need it in term of accessibility for using it with relay service via AIM, et al.

Yep, I plan to bring up the CC issue with Quicktime. Basically, I want to hear a commitment from them to port the same CC support that the new QT in 10.5 will have over to the iPhone.

There’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to do that.

A few other access issues: make it rotatable in ALL applications, not just web. It’d be nice to rotate it in Notes and Mail as well.

Keep those access issues coming! I’ll compile the list and bring it over to the meeting. The more issues that you can raise (and any solutions to go with it) would be great.

I don’t own an iPhone but have gone to the Apple store several times for a touchy-feely-play with the new device–and my wish list remains the same. No matter how far up the ladder we climb, the hearing public continues to soar ahead of us! Hope you’ll include my itemized list (comment #34 in “iPhone Accessibility: Send an email”) on yours when you meet with the head honchos (or reps) next week.

I have a suggestion unrelated to the above. Have found myself to be lost while roaming through Categories (right-hand sidebar). Would be easier knowing where I’m at if a category title is viewable at the center top bar where “1 switched” is located (or elsewhere as long as subcategoy is easily viewable). And how about adding “Suggestions…” to the Categories list?

I’m like JJ – don’t have much to say, just a “hi!” (or “yo!”). Thought you had gone into the mountains of West Virginia or something. ;-)

Something to add re: the meeting: you could probably say that there are a lot of people – like me – who are cheapskates. I was going to buy the iPhone, until I figured out the costs and overall benefits – screw it, I’m not spending tons of money for something that wouldn’t meet my needs. I know the iPhone has amazing programs (iCal, email, web, etc.) – but it doesn’t meet my particular needs. If I’m going to spend hundreds of dollars on something, it’s gotta be for everything, not just so I can be cool. :) That, and the fact that it wasn’t automatically accessible to me as a deaf person sucks.

(By the way, has anyone noticed that the iPhone television commercials are finally captioned? Yeah!)

Landscape Keyboard – An accessible accommodation who need a wider version of the current portrait format keyboard. Those with dexterity limitations on their fingers.

Also, I am not sure if Iphone comes with font size changer for those with visual limitations as well.

Barry,

Please make sure to have them speed up with TAP Plan. I called the AT&T’s TAP Phone line and one of the representative said it might take 1 to 6 months for AT&T to make the change. I find this hard to believe and I didn’t want this to happen on the 6th month!? No excuse. So, please make sure that they offer TAP plan for iPhone users ASAP!

and one more thing….

Let’s go and kick some butt!

Could you also throw in that there is deaf people who use blackberry under ATT does not get tap plan. Considering future transfer from blackberry to iphone and growing number of deaf people become ATT customers in the future. Emphasis that the TAP will bring in more deaf customers and that mean it will increase ATT and APPLE’s market share.

There is a marketing angle you could pitch to Apple and AT&T. Currently, ten percent (10%) of T-Mobile’s customers are deaf and hard-of-hearing. AT&T and Apple are in the business to make money, period, and show them the number (how the switch from T-Mobile to AT&T will make them big bucks). That should help AT&T and Apple reconsider their stance on TAP for iPhones.

No way! 10% of T-Mobile’s customers are deaf?? Where do you get the information?

Dunno if you know, T-Mobile is from Germany.

I’m hearing and my partner is Deaf. I have been using the sidekick but bought the iphone 1 week ago. My partner and I are having such a hard time communicating with each other.
No chat is really a bummer as well as no mail push, I have had no choice but to use SMS which will end up costing me a FORTUNE. I don’t want to take my iphone back, I’ve grown very attached to it but both of us are very frustrated with the service and no TAP. I don’t think anyone hearing or deaf should be forced to have a voice plan if they are not going to use it and hearing people like reminders that they have a message waiting too.
AT&T needs to understand that there are many hearing people that have deaf friends, partners and terps that will shy away from the iphone because of poor access.
So they are not only losing 10% they are losing hearing that interact with the deaf.

hey, have you ever heard about BeeJive program that allows you to get online (AIM) by using on Safari.

Simply, when using iPhone, open safari and go to this website: http://www.appmarks.com/site/

Click on “BeeJive” -there you go, online and chatting with friends. Isn’t it cool?

Off the point- but really incredible.

Check out http://www.colorwarepc.com

They paint your macbooks, macbook pros, and iMACS in about 28 shades of color. I’m speechless. It costs $450 to do the job, though. I’m going to call them through VP tomorrow to see if it’s for real and not a rip off company.

Just thought y’all might like to know and check it out for yourself. They do iPhones, too.

10% of T-Mobile’s customers are deaf??

I find that hard to believe too! Yes, must prove the information that 10% is from deaf population. I am more likely to believe that between 0.05% to 0.5% of T-mobile customers are deaf rather than astounding 10% which is pretty too high.

The 10% figure was received from a VRS provider who hired a research firm to calculate the demographics of Deaf and Hard of Hearing users with mobile devices.

I, too, have a hard time believing it. I’m just sharing what I learned, take or leave it.

Know this is off topic but wanted to comment to #18. Yahoo Email has “Push Email” for iPhone. It’s the only one, for now, that is e=mail push (email delivered immediately like Blackberry, Sidekick, et al). Probably best to create a brand-new Yahoo email address. It’s free.

If you want voicemail forwarded to you via E-mail, check out http://www.simulscribe.com. It’s great. Hearing callers can just leave a message and then few minutes later I will get the email of the message on my pager. Then I can call back via VRS when I can. Costs me $10 a month for 40 messages.

Recently, I visited Mall of America’s Apple. They had huge Iphone station that open to public. I played with Iphone and was very impressed with programs, touch menu, etc..

BUT I noticed it can do vertical and horizontal position on everything except Keyboard. It would be nice if keyboard can switch to narrow or wide version. It will help those who are transferring from sidekick to iphone. Its an thought to consider for next generation. And I would enjoy flexibility between narrow and wide keyboard. Let them to be first of its kind.
